The UO School of Journalism and Communications wanted an interactive experience that celebrates the outstanding success of its many notable alumni while inspiring students with possibility. The challenge being the client didn't have a vision much beyond the data and assets they wanted to showcase and the physical attributes to the space and technology provided. This was an opportunity where our design team could be free in their creative vision and in my role as UX Architect I needed to keep a balance between that vision and practical user flow.
The display was rather a large 3 x 3 wall of 55" TVs
All screens had a touch screen overlay.
Directional speakers were also provided in the ceiling above the unit.
One of the first things we had to define is how users would interact with such a large display. Some of the designs that came up during initial concepting brought to light such questions as; how many people could be using the display at once? What are the best ways to search through alumni? How would we present all of the relevant info about each alumni? How accessible was the display for varying heights? How would the presentation be to those not engaged with the display, whether someone else was engaged or not? These are some of the questions that helped narrow down a general direction.
